Last Saturday morning I passed some time sewing up 50 simple calico teddy bears. I don't want to sew up a teddy - ever again!
They did such a great job....I was amazed at how quickly they all picked it up. Some of their hand stitching was super neat and tidy! Making the bears reminded me to incorporate handcrafts into the curriculum more often. Teaching life skills skills such as sewing and knitting are too often forgotten about in schools these days. What do you think?
They look fantastic Tracey. The kids must be so proud of themselves too!
ReplyDeleteGreat.
ReplyDeleteIt is more than just life skills that they're learning - it is problem solving, choice, negotiation re: supplies, making something unique... and on and on and on... I'd feel proud too if they'd been my students.
Aww I love them. Aren't they cleaver. Can't quite imagine my little class sewing yet, but I am currently thinking of end of year crafty activities. Ideas?
ReplyDeleteI wish you were my teacher in school - that looks like such a fun class! Nice work on the 50 teddy bears - quite a task!
ReplyDeletefantastic effort - the bears turned out lovely. I agree that handcrafts are definately a worthwhile activity - lets the kids develop fine motor skills, creativity and patience.
ReplyDeleteHave a fun time camping!
What a great pre-camp activity. The kids have done a fabulous job.
ReplyDeleteWow you go girl!!! And what an amazing project to see come together, they are adorable!
ReplyDeleteGood Luck with the trip you brave woman!
What a beautiful idea. The teddies look fabulous. I do hope they behave themselves and don't talk til midnight!
ReplyDeleteOh how cool are they?! I love the one near the front with the pink piggy-like nose & bright blue eyes!
ReplyDeleteWhat a crafty class!
The teddies look fantastic. Well done to your class. I really do think they should have some mums and grandmas and dads to come in and teach kids to knit. I learnt in Grade 4 at school and didnt too well back then, but I am happy to say that it inspired me to ask my mum to teach me later on. They could always try some of the knitting nancys too!
ReplyDeleteThey are so much fun! Love them all sitting together like that :) K
ReplyDeleteThose are wonderful- I hope my bub gets a teacher as creative, giving and patient as you one day. What lucky lucky children. xo Meagan.
ReplyDeleteEvery week I choose a sort of informal favourite creaative space and it's definitely yours this week!!! I love your idea and all credit to the kids for making such great, individual teddy's. You and your class are one dynamic combination. HOpe the camp goes well, and that it doesn't rain the whole time!! Did you make a bear for yourself? Hope so! Thanks for a really inspiring post xo
ReplyDeleteOh that is just the best idea ever! I've got a grade 3er and earlier in the year at camp time some members of the class were a bit embarrased about having to take their furry friend with them. This solves that problem and so many more. Love it!
ReplyDeleteCrafting from a young age is one of the best ways of developing skills that will be used throughout life. Taking Teddy to camp is an awesome idea.
ReplyDeletethese are sooo cute, what a great idea, I bet they had a ball.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely thing to do. The kids have done a great job!
ReplyDeleteThey look great - My little girl is off to camp next week , it's a yr 2/3 class so she has a brave teacher too...lots of us parents going for support though
ReplyDeletei have a little miss 10 who is in grade 4 and you must be an ace grade 4 teacher. those bears are so lovely. tell your kids we loved them. have fun at camp
ReplyDeleteThe teddies look wonderful. The kids did a great job. Craft and sewing was always the best part of primary school!
ReplyDeleteGreat job done by you and the kids. Looks like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeletewhat a neat idea - and such great work - good luck.
ReplyDeleteOh, I bet they absolutely loved it! They look so sweet. My sis is a teacher and I have been roped into helping on quite a few projects so I know what you mean about sewing overload. : )
ReplyDeleteI salute you fellow teacher. Awesome idea and a sign of a teacher who cares. Well done to you.
